This project was initiated during a course in Material-Driven Design, co-designed with Anna Åkesson, and further developed in the summer of 2023 through an innovation scholarship with Leapfrogs. Finding a local waste stream with abundant resources was key to our approach. In 2022, Sweden harvested 426,000 tonnes of rapeseed, yielding 7,400 tonnes of filter cake.
Our vision is to create a biodegradable biocomposite that is shock-resistant, water-resistant, and has a warm, solid, natural, and durable feel—all derived from the residual materials of cold-pressed rapeseed oil production.
The final presentation features the material in the context of furniture. Here, we simplified the stand to create a more minimalist design, allowing the material’s natural expression to take center stage. We designed a simple sideboard, with the top made from the material developed during our summer scholarship project.
